"Water-Too-Cold" Excuse
A pathetically trivial, absurd, or technical pretext used by a self-righteous individual to cover up their sudden cowardice and retreat during a critical crisis. It involves deliberate concealment, where the actor stubbornly rebrands their sheer fear of personal sacrifice as a mere "lack of readiness" (i.e., framing their cowardice as simply "not being fully prepared yet").Origin: From a 1645 Chinese historical event. The grand scholar-official Qian Qianyi(钱谦益), a towering elite figure who constantly preached moral integrity, promised his lower-status concubine Liu Rushi(柳如是) that they would drown together in a pond to preserve their honor. However, at the water's edge, Qian merely dipped his hand in and backed out, lamely claiming "the water is too cold, I cannot do it." While his concubine—who had no societal obligation to die—bravely tried to jump in anyway, Qian physically restrained her, chose self-preservation, and promptly surrendered to the enemies.
Brad spent years lecturing everyone about institutional integrity, but when the whistleblower opportunity came, he offered a classic "water-too-cold" excuse, claiming he wasn't "fully prepared" because of a minor administrative delay, while his interns risked everything to leak the files.
