Newtonmas

An alternative celebration of Christmas for science/techno-geeks, based on the fact that December 25 (1642) is Isaac Newton's birthdate.
"Doogie, why is there an apple at the top of your Christmas tree?"
"I'm a physicist, I'm celebrating Newtonmas."

Newton

1) A Newton (N) is a unit of force equal to 1 (kilogram)(meter)/(second)^2. . . . NOT the way Jordan has written it. Without the ^2, you get mass*velocity, which is equal to momentum, not force. Named for Sir Isaac Newton.

2) A 17th century scientist credited for inventing calculus and discovering various principles of physics (e.g., gravity, 3 laws of motion, optics).
1) It took, like, 1000 Newtons to push my sister out of my room.

2) Sir Isaac Newton is my hero.

Newton Mearns

AKA "The Mearns"

An affluent (for Scotland) dormitory suburb of Glasgow. Home to nouveau riche, intellectually bankrupt non-entities with delusions of grandeur. Has three high schools, pupils of which aspire to study advanced knitting at Laughside College or socio-cultural analysis of teen vampire fiction with fashion blogging and "business" at Glasgow "Cannae" University.

Often hard working, successful parents find themselves shunned by their children after they fail to affect a Mearnsy accent. The children will, however, still require insurance on the Porche Cayenne and a non-job in the family business.

It also contains much of Scotland's Jewish population, leaving it only 98% white Scottish protestant.
I would never leave Newton Mearns for the West end, full of pretentious snobs. Also, my mother's here...

Leibniz-Newton Effect

The Leibniz-Newton Effect, or LNE, signifies when two alike or similar products or ideas are either created or discovered by two different individuals with no clear evidence that Guy 1 and Guy 2 had any influence on each other.

The term is derived from the fact that Gottfried Leibniz and Isaac Newton both discovered calculus, without knowing about each other until after they had both attempted to get their work published.

In the world of animation, it is said to be the effect of two studios coming up with very similar ideas for a movie with no clear proof that one truly did steal the idea from the other.
With no real solid evidence that either one truly inspired the other, it remains plausible that the release of the eerily similar "Flushed Away" by Dreamworks and "Ratatouille" by Pixar is an instance of the Leibniz-Newton Effect, wherein which great minds think way too much alike.
