clutching at straws

Out of desparation, the act of reaching or stretching for a solution, no matter how irrational or inconsequential. Literally - a drowning person who, unable to find any substantial floatation immediately at had, attempts to save himself from certain death by grabbing hold of a few stray pieces of straw floating on the water within arm's length.

The Senator from Florida, caught red-handed sending lewd and lascivious text messages to underage male pages, was clutching at straws for an alibi and escape. Alcoholism? Resignation?

Friend Crutch 

Someone you use in order to stop boredom because all of your other cool friends are at work, with family, etc.

A Friend Crutch is a person who is usually obnoxious or a tool on certain occasions, but won't make you flip out every minute.

Guy 1: You hanged out with Ryan yesterday?! Dude he is such a tool....

Guy 2: Don't worry he is only a friend crutch, everyone else was busy.

pearl clutcher 

An uptight person, usually but not always female, usually but not always of conservative mores, who reacts with shock, feigned or otherwise, at other people's violations of decorum, propriety, morality, and so forth.

Someone got up at the PTA meeting and suggested the school hand out condoms to teenagers. The pearl clutchers in the audience nearly went into cardiac arrest.

clutchbomb

an unfortunate turn of events. A situation that starts out positive and comes crashing down in flames. Or when one person's chances for success are destroyed by another person's actions, often unintentially.

I was on my way to the ball game, when I got a flat tire. That took me an hour to fix and by the time I got home, my roommates clutchbombed me by drinking all my beer.

My plane ticket was sitting on the counter, but my mom thought it was clutter and threw it in the trash, what a clutchbomb!

He was waiting for the girl from the other night to call him back, but his brother found his phone sitting out, answered it and told her she was fat. It was the ultimate clutchbomb!
