A members of a high school clique will often resort to this tactic in order to create gossip about having haters. Some narcissistic people, usually in high school, secretly desire haters. They feel as tho it makes them look cool to “have haters” and gives them a degree of clout in social circles. It also helps ferment some juicy group chat conversations and drama gossip. This is similar to covert trolling.
