Sundowning is a term used to describe a decline in cognitive abilities toward the late afternoon or evening. It is a common pattern in senile dementia.
Poor Grandma tends towards sundowning around dusk; she's fairly alert in the morning but gets more confused in the evening.

Term given to the environmental phenomenon occurring at Oak Street Beach in Chicago, Illinois where at sunset the non-black beach patrons leave and are quickly replaced by black beach goers. The transition is subtle and, yet, profound. Occurs almost within 10 minutes of sunset with surprising accuracy.
The flip: "It's getting near 7pm and the sun's about to set, we should probably get going home"
Trojan: "Yeah, I've noticed the sundowning already"
The flip: "dude, the sun hasn't set yet"

someone who is negatively affected by the sun going down. often refers to people with Alzheimer disease or other mental illnesses losing control at night.
