There was a music venue called The Armadillo; when it went under, it became an emblem of the "weird" Austin that was being encroached on. If you see someone old enough to have been to The Armadillo (the club), with long unkempt grey hair in a ponytail, trailing the faint odor of whatever they were smoking, wearing a faded 70's punk-rock t-shirt, you have met an "armadillo". Their numbers are declining, but they are still to be seen, like an endangered species in their native ecosystem that invasive species are encroaching on.
