Refers to publicly-voiced derisive/uncomplimentary remarks/details ("sass") made about someone regarding his less-than-perfect-looking posterior ("ass").

(a prime example of character ass-sass-ination, from an old "Blondie" cartoon) Mrs. Dithers: In my younger days, I had quite a following.
Mr. Dithers: And she still does, heh, heh, heh... (cheekily placing his hand beside his mouth as if to prevent his wife from hearing his "aside" remark) ...but her dress-maker keeps it well-hidden!
Dagwood (staring down at Mr. Dithers' prostrate figure that's sprawled untidily on the floor as his irately-unamused wife stomps off in a huff): Do you see stars, Boss?
Mr. Dithers: Stars?!?? I can see the entire AURORA BOREALIS!!!

When a Character is written not too Out of Character (OOC) but just enough that the writers bias of them shine through and change them enough that it’s noticeable

Great Character

A vague term of praise bestowed upon sports teams or players when a commentator or pundit wants to praise them, but cannot highlight anything about their performance that was particularly good. Especially popularised by former Liverpool and Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, the term 'great character' is good as it is ambiguous enough that a team or athlete does not have to show any particular attribute to qualify for it, but nevertheless vaguely implies some kind of tenacity or strength of personality on their part.

"The boys showed great character out there today to get that win."
