Putting lipstick on a pig. Making something look more appealing by questionable and potentially damaging means. Particularly used in pearl collector language to mean putting diamond clasps and on mediocre pearl strands and presenting them in facy boxes.

Just mabelswine that strand and someone will buy it.

maredo

That unhappy, slightly uncomfortable feeling you get when you're lonely or feeling vulnerable. Usually accompanied by a sense of lowness and a disagreeable feeling in the pit of your stomach.

As he sat by himself in the restaurant he felt the eyes of tables of people feeling sorry for him. He over-ordered, ate too much, and felt even worse - an uncomfortable sense of maredo engulfed him. He was alone in a city he didn't know, with no friends to speak of, and he just wanted to be back home.
