Melbourne is a metropolitan city located in Australia, and the capital city of the state, Victoria. Melbourne is the second most populous in Australia - with a population of 3.9 million. From 1901 to 1927, Melbourne was the capital city of Australia, until Canberra took over.
Melbourne is the 3rd most economically livable city in the world, and overall the 17th most livable city in the world.
Melbourne is the centre of arts, education, culture, commerce, tourism, sports (particularly AFL) and industry.
Melbourne held the Summer Olympics in 1956.

Melbourne is also famous for its parks, multicultural society and its contemporary buildings.

The weather in Melbourne is unreliable and typical. It has boiling summers and cold winters. The temperature could range from 0 degrees in Winter to 45 degrees in Summer.
In one day, the weather can change dramatically. Due to its weather, Melbourne is known for its "four seasons in one day".
Melbourne has the largest Jewish population in Australia, with 60,000.
Some famous features in Melbourne are: The Eureka Tower - which is the tallest building in the southern hemisphere, the Yarra River, Chadstone - the biggest shopping centre in the southern hemisphere, Federation Square, Luna Park, Rialto Towers, Docklands, Chinatown, Parliament House of Victoria, Royal Botanical Gardens, Crown Casino and the Telstra Dome.

Sydney and Melbourne criticise each other, and fight over who is the best. But face it Sydney...Melbourne is the best.
Reasons why Melbourne is better than Sydney and why Sydney sucks:
- You think the Sydney Opera House is 'cool'? It's just the look of it that is decent, and since when was OPERA cool?
- The Sydney Harbour Bridge? Yawn. Who cares about a bridge?
- We have the biggest shopping centre and the tallest building in the southern hemisphere.

- Sydney is over-crowded and has financial problems.
- Sydney is dangerous and has a lot of bums and drunk people at night-time.
- Melbourne is known for a sport - AFL, and cricket as well...what sport is SYDNEY known for??
- Sydney-siders are unfriendly and are SHIT drivers. Car crashes are extremely common is Sydney.
- It's very, very hard to find your way around in Sydney. Even navigation systems stuff up and get confused in Sydney when showing you the way to places (in cars).
- Melbourne hosted the Olympic Games WAY before Sydney.
- Yes, I guess Sydney's beaches are better, but due to the weather, it's almost impossible to find a good day to go to the beach because of all its RAIN.
- Sydney has never been the capital city of Australia.

- It is hard to find decent food in Sydney.
- Sydney is never peace and quiet.
- Due to Sydney's over-crowdedness it is hard to find an area to place new buildings.

- Just because the mono-rail is 'fun' because it is up high and feels like you are going to fall off because it is so narrow, it is actually really dangerous, like on a boiling day, when the mono-rail tracks expand, the auto-thingmabob could fall off and you will crash to the ground. That's why it is safer to have trams (like in Melbourne) instead of mono-rails.
- Sydney is not multicultural, with mainly just the Catholic religion.
- Any tourists that visit Sydney never end up living there, tourists that visit Melbourne end up living here.
- MELBOURNE IS GREAT. =D
SENARIO #1:
An American family is thinking of travelling to Australia in the summer holidays:
Bobert: Where should we travel to THIS year, Marianne?
Marianne: Oh, I reckon we should travel to somewhere not too hot, and not too cold. A place where we can have fun without just focusing on the beach. Hmm...what about Melbourne?
Bobert: Wow, Marianne! What a thoughtful idea, once again! This will be a memorable holiday!

SENARIO #2:
A Melbournian and a Sydney-sider meet each other on the streets:
Melbournian: Hello, Sydney-sider. Nice to meet you. I am very much eager to ask, what is your name? Maybe we could be friends.
Sydney-sider: What the fuck are you doing talking to me, mother fucker?? Are you a Melbournian? My name is go fuck yourself, and I don't want to be friends with you, biatch.

Melbournian: Well, as I can see you are not the type of person I should be making friends with. I can tell, you are obviously a Sydney-sider. Just guessing.

Melbourne is a sexy, cosmopolitan city located in the state of Victoria, Australia. If Melbourne were personified she would be gorgeous, aromatic, and a'la mode, sipping on a mocha. Its Australia's fashion capital, not to mention the centre of the arts, culture, shopping and food. And yes there is a 'friendly regional rivalry' between Melbourne and Sydney. And as others have had stabs at the worlds most liveable city, I'd like to provide some real defence, as un-biasedly as I can:

* Melbourne actually got to be a capital for a while (1901-27), sydney never did. In fact the High Court of Australia was only moved to Canberra in 1980.

* I'm sure many love 'footy' and rugby, yet Football (aka soccer) is the world game and played by the world's masses, making both these sports quite insignificant in regards to any 'claim of superiority' by either city.

* Melbourne hosted the Olympics nearly half a century before sydney, and still holds bigger and more significant events, eg Melbourne Cup, Australian Tennis Open, Grand Prix etc, plus a stack of other art/food/fashion festivals already mentioned.

* As a city there actually is some marvellous architecture, too much to mention, though some already has been. The Opera house is a gem however, but I'm rather over the bridge. Melbourne's city planning is undoubtedly superior to sydney, and everyone knows it, with its roads and streets, esp in the CBD. And let's not forget Melbourne's intricate transport system. It's modern yet also charming, with so many sleek cafe's and 'eateries' tucked away in its laneways. Our tollways have E-Tags, which sydney should invest in. Stopping to pay on the freeway? Plus the congestion to follow, its ridicilous. Not forgetting the road lanes, which are dangerously small.

* The rest becomes rather trivial, but what the heck-
the Harbour Bridge's fireworks-its been done, no-one cares.
Melbourne has the taller office building (Rialto Towers) and residential tower (Eureka Tower), yet sydney still has the tallest structure in general (Centrepoint). Melbourne's Crown Casino is larger than sydney's Star City and so is Melbourne's National Gallery of Victoria, compared to sydney's Art Gallery of New South Wales.

And some of the lame things I've heard. Better beaches? We have some fantastic beaches, yet don't deny Bondi's superior popularity. At least our beaches are 'war free'. People also 'give shit' to Melbourne's weather. What is that, is that meant to be a 'call'? Does anyone even care? If anything it's never boring and sydney actually gets more rain. Someone even mentioned gang warfare what the hell? And I've heard of racial tension, but race hate gangs? Unheard of in Melbourne. 'Wogs' and 'Skips' generally get along very well here. And Melbournians raving on about what we have? Dont flatter yourselves Melbourne really doesn't need to prove anything to sydney.
Sydney loser: "Damn I need new shoes."

another Sydney loser: "How much does a ticket to Melbourne cost these days?"

Melbourne is home to the F1 and arial ping-pong. City is very dull in terms of architecture. A poor version of Sydney. Sydney is now ranked higher in the quality of life scale for cities around the world. Will always live in the shadows of Sydney.
AFL is only played in Melbourne, what a fucking excuse for a sport.

Melbournians think they are the shit.

What the fuck is there to do in Melbourne?

literally the greatest city on earth...it has been named the worlds most livable city way too many times, and will continue to be named that for many years to come.

melbourne is home to australia's best schools, most livable suburbs and lga's, has the best food, and is known as being the sporting/fashion/cultural and food capital of australia.

melbourne has great infustructure, with buses, trains and of course the famous tram which people interstate are too lame to have.

we have the best private and public schools, the affluent suburb of kew has the most private schools in one area than anywhere else in the world. also, every suburb and lga in melbourne and victoria has the highest livability (which basically means no area is riddled with poverty)...comapre that to every other state/city which has some terrible areas that are highly unlivable.

afl is the greatest and most popular sport, so stop trying to compare it to rugby played by two states in australia..please no one even knows, nor cares about the difference between league and union.

melbourne is home to the MCG! named one of the 7 wonders of the sporting world. we are also home to the greatest shopping precincts in australia- highpoint, chadstone, doncaster westfield, chapel street, bridge rd, south yarra, prahran ect. and our food here is the best! and our water is the cleanest out of all aus...no chemical treatment needed.

our beaches kick ass, the mornington peninsula rocks it during summer.

dropkicks from interstate say our weather is shit...well firstly our summers are awesome with sunny weather and clear skies, and our winters are awesome too, at least we have a winter. and NO, it DOES NOT snow here, so why do people say you need chains on your car? do that, and you will be sorry you did...it only snows up in the mountains...so you see we actually HAVE somewhere to vacation to in the winter.

yeah we have funny accents, but thats just coz everyone from around the world wants to live in melbourne, and their accents just rub off on us.

now there is a reason why we insist on hating on sydney...because we are literally better than them (every survey, every test shows that melbourne is the most liveable city in aus and the world). OMG YOU HAVE AN OPERA HOUSE AND BRIGDE, YOU MUST BE THE GREATEST CITY EVER. umm let me tell you something, and this is a fact, the reason why sydney wasnt named a liveable city is coz it had MORE crime than new york city. sydney metro pop. 4million, nyc metro pop. 18 million...wow sucks to live in sydney. also, melbourne has the most amount of people moving to it from interstate than any other city in aus, and sydney people are the most coming here to live...so obviously syd people are either smart for moving, or dumb for still living there.

melbournians love people from all over australia, we dont bag wa, sa, qld, na, tas, act, or nsw...only sydney people coz they are in denial of their own lives.

yeah we think we are the greatest, coz we are!
sydney person: 'omg sydney is way better coz we have an opera house and rip off housing prices'

melbourne person: 'dude...i dont care about you. i am better than you, so can you leave me alone?'

sydney person: 'but i am sooo insecure and in denial with myself! i have to prove to everyone i am the best!'

melbourne person: 'okay well...im going to the mcg to watch the footy, then ill go to lygon st to get some kickass food, and then ill go shopping to chapel st...bye weirdo...'

Magical kingdom that boasts rare species of hipster, artist, muzza, bogan, emo and humble indie kid.
cultural wonderland of awesomeness.
It's actually fucking great. so many hidden quirky shops down pokey laneways. awesome street art, and interesting people everywhere.
go shopping there. my flavorite shops are lost and found indoor market on smith street, and retrostar in the city. but go exploring, there are so many wondrous places and shops and lanes full of splendorful and wow-inducing things.
all the people that say melbourne is shite must be on crack because if they got one day to experience the real melbourne, there is no way they could say it was a hole. it may not be everyones personal preference of place, but its definitely not shit.
if I had arms that I was able to extend to bizarre lengths, I would wrap them around melbourne, because it is so damn huggable.
peace to sydney. I like you to.
melbourne is great. really, it is.

A classy, sophisticated, stylish and cosmopolitan city of Australia.

The city prides itself on it's rich cultural heritage, multiculturalism, fashion, shopping, sport, food, live music scene, arts, entertainment, restaurants, bars, clubs, cafes, art-filled laneways and alleyways, and parks and gardens.

Melbourne has some of the worlds greatest restaurants and dining experiences, and some of the oldest and amazing architecture in Australia.

It is named the fashion, food, cultural, live music scene, literature, arts, and entertainment capitals of Australia, and the Sporting capital of the WORLD!!

Sydney may be the postcard city; the city that is nice to look at, but that is it.... whereas Melbourne is they city you want to live in! Melbourne is also beautifully situated on the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay. The sunsets/sunrises are amazing! Also, Sydney spend all their money on promoting their city overseas.. big mistake!! Melbourne spends its money on improving the healthcare, schools, transport and infrastructure, which puts it in the top 3 most livable cities in the world!
Person 1: "I absolutely LOVE Melbourne with all my heart"
Person 2: "It is such a stunning city with real depth and substance to it"
Person 3: "Something Sydney is missing, ey?"
