–adjective swanky; elegant; posh: a ritzy neighborhood; a ritzy hotel. After the Ritz hotel. A very illustrious description of someone or something.

Those people at the party were just to ritzy for me. That hotel was just way to ritzy for me, im going to motel 6.

ritz

1. A brand of crackers. Many times, they're actually two crackers with a filling in the middle, such as cheese or peanut butter. According to a submitted definition, it's this way because 'Ritz' is apparently slang for a half-Asian, half-European person - the white crackers were the white part and the yellow cheese is the Asian part. Another definition here claims it's that way because the maker of Ritz wanted a fancy name. Whatever the case may be, the cracker brand is owned by a large corperate company - Nabisco - so both explainations seem unlikely, but they may be true.

2. Fancy or elegant. (Exact definition.)

3. 'Stylishness.' This definition is implied from the song 'Puttin' on the Ritz,' which describes one trying to seem stylish, and then says, 'puttin' on the Ritz.' When it says, 'go to... where Fashion sits' before 'puttin' on the Ritz,' it's implying that wearing the latest fashion is related to Ritz, and that Ritz is largely based on your appearance. The song also mentions one trying to look like Gary Cooper, who was a popular celebrity at the time of the song's creation. 'Puttin' on the Ritz' evidently means 'dressing up stylishly.'

Used to describe anything bona fide or legit like as a seal of approval.

Originated from Andy Griffith (speaking on a Ritz Cracker TV commercial):
"Mmm-mmmmh. Anything sits good on a Ritz." Supposed to mean Ritzes are so excellent.
IT SITS WELL ON A RITZ refers to being good enough for a Ritz (figuratively).
Not limited to just food.

"I sure do like King Kelly orange marmalade. IT SITS WELL ON A RITZ."
"This Humboldt Purple I gots here SITS ON A RITZ, too. Load a bowl and see for yourself."
"Oh, that's just my cuz. He OK; he SHITS ON THE RITZ."
