Boat Smoke

Boat smoke is the exhaust gas that comes out of a 2 stroke motor that is common to many pontoon boats. This exhaust gas cloud typically has a bluish tint that typically emits as a motor is started up or fast acceleration takes place. A humid, hot day with minimal or no air movement will cause a boat smoke cloud to form over the water or in coves on the lake. “2 stroke smoke hangs around!”
Many educated people would mistake a cloud over water for fog but in reality it is just boat smoke.

The Old Smoke

Through the 19th and in the early half of the 20th century, Londoners used coal for heating their homes, which produced large amounts of smoke. In combination with climatic conditions this often caused a characteristic smog, and London became known for its typical "London Fog", also known as "Pea Soupers". London was sometimes referred to as "The Smoke" because of this. In 1952 this culminated in the disastrous Great Smog of 1952 which lasted for five days and killed over 4,000 people. In response to this, the Clean Air Act 1956 was passed, mandating the creating of "smokeless zones" where the use of "smokeless" fuels was required (this was at a time when most households still used open fires); the Act was effective, though the nickname is still used sarcastically. Many cities have since aquired the nickname "The Smoke", but London was the first, hence "The Old Smoke".

blowing smoke up my ass

to bullshit or lie, to tell a falsehood. originally comes from the era of snake-oil salesmen and traveling hucksters pandering cure-all ointments.

one said cure for many ailments (including constipation) was a "tobacco enema" in which the purveyor would literally blow smoke up the afflicted's rectum with a device created solely for this purpose. obviously people caught on soon enough, and figured out that tobacco enemas were embarrassing as well as useless.

as such, the phrase became the euphemism it is today for selling a line of nonsense to an otherwise naive or unsuspecting rube.

smoked irish

This was the name given to blacks in England and in America. It comes from the theory that the two underclass races would eventually merge together and form one race.

'No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs' - sign posted on many places of work, phasing out a bit before the mid-20th Century. Many Irish pubs have an old sign like this put up above the door for ironic amusement and historical interest. As if to say, 'This is the way things were.'
