The person then goes out to a store and buys an item that if seen by the other would increase his respect of him. There are two results of this. The criticized person would then take the bought item and then never look at it or use it or they could return/sell it after a couple of days.

Either in nice weather when many people are doing big spring cleanings, or on designated house-clearance dates posted by officials, on the curb in front of people's houses you will see bookcases, desks, large plastic toys, bikes, lawnmowers, and things of similar nature. During these times you will see families driving around with a rented trailer browsing through things and taking what they deem sellable.
Dude, look at that gypsy family curb shopping with their van. They are driving through the suburbs with 2 mph stopping traffic, and things are falling off the roof at every speed bump.
