DDT is an insecticide that was used throughout the 50's, 60's, and early 70's. It's short for dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene. It was finally banned in 1972 because of the harmful tolls it took on wildilfe.

Cynical is right, but certain pests had a resistance to it, and now most bugs are resistant to DDT. It also killed off bugs that helped crops by eating harmful ones.
