Dynamic-Complex System

The ultimate system type—both dynamic (constantly changing) and complex (with interacting components producing emergent behavior). Dynamic-complex systems are what you're actually dealing with most of the time: ecosystems, economies, societies, organizations, families, your own mind. They can't be predicted, can't be controlled, can't be fully understood. They can only be navigated—with humility, attention, and constant adaptation. Dynamic-complex systems are why experience matters more than theory, why wisdom exceeds knowledge, why the best-laid plans go awry. They're also where life happens—if you want simple, predictable systems, study rocks. If you want to live, study dynamic-complex systems and accept that you'll never master them, only learn to dance with them.

The Dynamic Method acknowledges that as you learn more about your subject, you must adjust your tools, questions, and approaches. It's the difference between following a recipe and improvising a dish as you taste it. This approach is essential for truly novel territory where no established protocol exists—you don't know what you're looking for until you start finding it, and you don't know how to look until you've seen something.

Dynamic Hedging Theory

A financial theory and practice of continuously adjusting positions to neutralize risk, particularly associated with options trading. Dynamic Hedging involves constantly rebalancing a portfolio to maintain a desired risk profile, responding to market movements in real time. The theory argues that static hedges fail because markets move; dynamic hedging adapts. It's the difference between setting a course and staying it no matter what (static) versus constantly adjusting to wind and current (dynamic). In Taleb's work, dynamic hedging is both a practice and a metaphor: life requires constant adjustment, constant response to new information, constant rebalancing of risk. The theory that works for options also works for existence: you can't set and forget; you have to stay engaged, stay responsive, stay alive to change.

It's the study of how objects move when forces are applied, encompassing everything from a falling apple to a rocket launch. Dynamic mechanics asks: given these forces, what will the motion be? Given this motion, what forces must have caused it? It's Newton's laws in action, the physics of why things go where they go when pushed, pulled, or thrown.

Dynamic naturalism rejects both supernaturalism (explanations outside nature) and static mechanism (nature as clockwork), insisting that nature itself is the source of all the change, complexity, and creativity we observe. Evolution is not a deviation from natural order but its core expression; emergence is not mystery but nature's normal mode of operation; novelty is not illusion but what nature constantly produces. Dynamic naturalism is what you get when you take nature seriously enough to include its history, its creativity, and its open-endedness in your understanding of what nature is.
