pubic school

A misspelling of "public school" whose existence and usage is a discouraging sign of the dismal state of mainstream publicly-funded education in North America.

Unlike England and Wales, where "public school" infers some sort of posh, stuffy fee-paying academy in the tradition of Hogwart's, the rest of the world uses "public school" to be a local, mainstream, taxpayer-funded class setting of widely-variable quality of instruction.

Nonetheless, it's disheartening to see standards slip to the point where the schools publish statements like (from the code of conduct of Lakeside Public School, Durham Region, Ontario) "Lakeside Pubic School committed to maintaining a positive school environment. All students are expected to uphold the values and expectations of our school’s code of conduct." or (from the Thames Valley District School Board) "Orchard Park Pubic School Updates - Kindergarten Registration for 2025-2026 - To be eligible for registration, kindergarten students must be 4 years old by December 31, 2025 (born in 2021)..."

IF this is what our schools are teaching? We're doomed. Doomed.

Pocket Panic

Pocket panic is the phenomenon of losing track of the whereabouts of some important item you carry on your person. Wallets, cash, identification, keys and cell phones are the items most likely to be misplaced and trigger an episode fo pocket panic.

After I got to my seat on the airplane, I had pocket panic because I couldn't find my keys, but my wife found them under my seat. They'd fallen out of my hip pocket.

The feeling of panic you experience when you hit the Enter button and realise you've made a mistake in the tax form.

Even though I was certain all the figures were correct, I experienced a rush of e-panic when I submitted the form.

storm panic

Preemptive canceling of school and businesses in lieu of snow storm or ice storm. Also the swatch of people who must buy milk, bread and eggs before such a storm.

The blizzard was supposed to hit until 2:30 pm, but the superintendent thought better of it just canceled school for the whole day. He was experiencing storm panic.
