With influences by the captivating and mysterious work of the artist, Sidney H. Sime and the ethereal dream-worlds of the author, Lord Dunsany, H.P. Lovecraft's work is the epitome of great Gothic literature. Some of his works include Dagon, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, The Cats of Ulthar, The Doom That Came to Sarnath, At the Mountains of Madness, The Thing on the Doorstep, and the infamous The Call of Cthulhu. Lovecraft's stories continue to spark the imaginations of authors today. There are countless modern Cthulhu Mythos and movies based on his stories. But nothing can come close to the original work of H.P. Lovecraft.

Said of a creature, it means something that merely knowing it exists can wear away at ones sanity, and seeing it can be even worse. Such creatures are usually older than humanity, from another planet or dimension, or both. They are not, in the classical sense, evil, but view humans as humans view ants. Stereotypical Lovecraftian creatues are slimey with lots of tentacles.

Said of a story, it can mean several things:

1) A story where the protagonist stumbles upon Things Man Was Not Meant To Know, and ends up telling the story either from within an insane asylum, or from a journal he kept that is discovered after he mysteriously disappears.

2) Any story containing a Lovecraftian creature.

The monster from "The Thing" is pretty Lovecraftian.

H. P. Lovecraft

Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) was the author of many short stories and the father of cosmicism. He wrote about a universe that is utterly meaningless and the cosmic horrors that live therein. He is considered the greatest writer of horror to live in the age after Poe and before Stephen King.

Lovecrafter

A person/individual who is into the Lovecraftian Fandom or the Cthulhu Mythos.
Much like Whovians, Sherlockians, Lovecrafters enjoy the same thing as other Lovecrafters.
Most commonly (and possibly Stereotypically) their favorite stories are either or both of Dunwich Horror or Call of Cthulhu.

Lovecrafter 1: I really love Call of Cthulhu and Dunwich Horror!
Lovecrafter 2: Oh, how original. No, Kadath and Shunned House was better.
Lovecrafter 3: You all suck, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward was the best one of them all.
Person 1: (whispering) What are they talking about?
Person 2: (whispering) They're Lovecrafters... Fanboys and Fangirls of Lovecraft.
