The act of taking a character from a show, book or other media who wasn't black and making them black or darker skin. Taken from the art form of taking a white canvas and making it darker with charcoal.

The opposite of whitewashing.

Look at Amber from Invincible. Netflix really can't stop charcoaling characters can they?

Charcoalized 

When your refrigerator water filter isn’t changed and the ice and/or water taste like charcoal. The filter has been charcoalized. Filter sediments have leaked into the water reservoir.

You didn’t change the water filter in time now the water tastes charcoalized.
