An oboelike instrument without keys, with a double reed mounted on a slender tube called "pirouette". The zurna has a shrill, piercing sound well suited to
music to be played in the open. Widespread among Bulgarians, Turks, Greeks, Albanians, Armenians, Georgians, and other Caucasus, Central
Asian, and Middle Eastern cultures, even into
China where it is called "so-na".
