Historically, the term was used to describe the Wallachians, who inhabited the autonomous state of Wallachia, which was a federal subject of the Ottoman Empire for some time. Some of those within that state have have chosen to emigrate to other Balkan countries such as Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Kosovo (depending on the perception of the user on whether it is a
country or not), mostly due to better opportunities to own land and live off of it.
