Secret Biases
Biases that are deliberately concealed from others, often because they are socially unacceptable or would damage one's reputation. Unlike hidden biases (unconscious), secret biases are known to the biased individual but actively hidden. They may be revealed in anonymous settings, leaked communications, or moments of unguarded speech. Secret biases explain the gap between what people say publicly and what they do privately. They are common in contexts where social desirability pressures conflict with genuine attitudes.
Example: “In public, he supported diversity initiatives; in private chats, he revealed secret biases against hiring certain groups. The bias wasn't hidden from him—it was hidden from everyone else.”
