Roligan (
maj.; Roligans) is a nickname used to describe danish sports fans, in various sports, however most commonly- and originating from football.
It is often used as a
joke antonym to the english football supporters; "Hooligans", because the danish fans are extremely calm and nice, whereas the english hooligans often
shine lasers in the eyes of their opponents.
The description was first popularized in the 1980s, and was a sort of movement to spread a message to the
world, that football should be about having fun, cozyness, being calm and well-mannered.
Indeed "hygge", often frowning upon the aforementioned
crazy, unsportsmanlike behavior of hooligans
The word itself derives from the danish word, "rolig" which translates into "calm". Then pulled together by the last 2 letters of "hoolig'an'"
