new left

The discontent with the status quo that was beginning to seethe apon college campuses drew young veterns of the civil rights struggle to a meeting in Port Huron, Michigan, in 1962. During that meeting they organized Stundents for a Democratic Society, whose soul purpose was to tear apart militarism, racial injustice, and poverty.

New Lefists gained national attention in 1964 when administrators at the Unversity of California at Berkeley banned on-campus recruiting of civil rights workers and fund-raising for the movement. The ban ingited the FSM(Free Speech Movement), which staged protests including a massive sit-in and arrest of some 800 people. The FSM became the model for campus protest, however the the issue of free speech soon paled before a much more pressing matter of stundent concern: the Vietnam War.
My friend says that the New Left was simply a bunch of early hippies with a "/real/ cause", but she doesn't understand much about the goverment... in any time period. Especially the 1960's.

New York left

Turning left from a red light a split second before it turns green, in order to beat the traffic on the other side of the intersection.
Your sitting at an intersection with a stoplight and it's red. There is someone on the opposite side of the intersection waiting for it to turn green as well. When you see the other light just turned red, you gun it and turn left before the other person has a chance to see the light turned green and goes. This is a New York Left.

New Jersey Left

The act of making a left turn at a traffic light as soon as it turns green. It is accepted practice in New Jersey to allow the first car at an intersection to make a left turn before opposing traffic proceeds.

Utility beer

Utility beer is the beer you keep around for the day-to-day moments when beer is a necessity to assist in pedestrian activities (golf, plumbing, yardwork, babysitting, staff meetings, Zoom calls). For the beer snob it is the beer you save for neighbors when they drop in at 3 p.m. on a Tuesday. It is differentiated from the actual high-end beer you save for special events, holidays, and special tastings.
Person 1: Dave, did you bring along those hazy craft IPA's so we could drink while cleaning Lyle's pool?
Person 2: Nope. I just have a bunch of utility beer that Steve dumped on me. Good enough for this. It is only 10:30 a.m.
