Michconsin

Although at one time the Michigan Territory included what is now the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota and a large portion of the Dakotas, much of it was eventually separated. In 1836 when Michigan was applying for statehood they exchanged a southern strip of land known as the Toledo Strip in exchange for a mass of land in what is now referred to as the Upper Peninsula. Often natural physical structures and waterways define geographic definitions. In this case any aerial map shows that Lakes Michigan and Huron should define the peninsula state of Michigan and what is now referred to as the Upper Peninsula should be ceded to Wisconsin and there form refereed to as Michconsin.
