A means of keeping a baseball game going in the event that each team is so small (3 players or so) that a player who is already on base must go back up to bat. An invisible man is then placed on the base previously occupied by the person who has gone up to bat.

British slang for a scientist or technical expert, esp . when the speaker is not certain of the expert’s specific field of study. Not necessarily derogatory, but typically used by persons without a technical background. In the US, the equivalent would be “egghead”, “squint”, or “geek.”
