What makes a dad joke isn't just the fact that it is often lame, but rather a dad joke is told souly for the entertainment of the teller (dad) and not the audience.

My dad didn't notice me in the room and just tested a stud finder on himself, beeped, said it worked, and laughed with nobody else around him. Typical dad joke

Dad joke

Jokes told by a lot of dads that may may been funny years or decades ago but have grown "tired" over time. Examples include "Caddy Shack" or "Borat" bits. Dads typically have a static repertoire of these jokes they have been perfecting for years.

Any time someone mentions New York Italians the Dad Joke in response may be "fuhgeddaboudit."
