That is best defined by how it differs from contrails. Chemtrails are perpendicular lines of clouds presumably extending from an aircraft. A contrail is noted by how quickly they disperse into the atmosphere because they are just water vapor. That is how chemtrails differ. Lines if cloud extend from the moment the source appears on the horizon, until it disappears from the horizon. The second attribute of chemtrails is that they persist in the sky for a greater duration than what is exhibited by contrails. There has been reports of a myriad of photos showing the difference between contrails & chemtrails, let alone videos showing them over time.
This is written in an effort to help correct the internet's ignorance on chemtrials. Even academics at universities appear easily confused on the difference between contrails & chemtrails. One academic wrote a report claiming they were only a conspiracy theory, which inspired a full minute of laughter.

A gas and nano-particle mixture typically sprayed behind an unmarked non-commercial airplane or group of airplanes with the goal of creating a mesh-like structure over the sky in a specific area. The gas and nano-particle mixture then expands over several hours and forms a silky-white film coverage quite like an umbrella. The purpose of these “umbrellas” sprayed all over the world has not yet been validated.

A nickname for contrail clouds left behind by planes that refers to a theory. It is believed that these contrails serve as pollution, reducing the earth surface's exposure to sunlight. This causes global cooling.
The theory though, is that there was and possibly stil is a government conspiracy, in which they are flying military planes that purposely create these chemtrails to cause global cooling (slowing down or lessening the effects of global warming).

Chemtrails are the trails that are left behind by some airplanes. They're usually silver iodide (AgI), potassium iodide (KI), or Dry Ice ( CO2 (s) , Solid Carbon Dioxide). They are part of a cloud seeding program to make it rain or snow more to help prevent droughts, and to try to cool earth a little more by creating more clouds. It's good for water, but insufficient for global warming, and greener energy options to reduce CO2 emissions (like solar, wind, and maybe nuclear energy) are needed and not dumping your trash in the ocean so that turtles can eat the jellyfish and not sting you during the summer. There are more wildfires now. Will the earth cool down in time?
