catasterpiece

(n): something that's so terribly messed-up, it could not possibly have been done worse, even on-purpose. Often the result of trying to cover-up a previous wrongdoing
When Claude tried to glue the broken statue back together before his boss returned, he glued the arm on the wrong side. It was a true catasterpiece.

catastrophic success

The new product was such a hit that the store ran out, resulting in angry crowds destroying the mall. It was a catastrophic success for the company.

Catantrum

A tantrum thrown during a game of Settlers of Catan.
Remember that time you stole Justin's longest road and he threw a catantrum? I almost lost an eye! That dude is nuts.

Catastrophizing

A psychotherapeutic term for a cognitive distortion where anxiety or depression leads you to infer apocalyptic conclusions from mundane setbacks and anxieties.
Catastrophizing usually comes in a litany of steps that start from a mundane setback all the way to absolute existential hoplessness. For instance:

1. Oh no, I'm going to be late for work.
2. My boss is going to be angry.
3. I'm going to lose my job.
4. I'm not going to be able to get another one.
5. I'm going to be unemployed forever.
6. My family will starve.
7. Oh God, we're all going to die!!!

Each step in the sequence is arguably plausible, but the snowball effect takes it into the realms of absurdity after a while.
