Around the
dank era of
memes, Big Chungus was one the the most popular
memes around. Centered around an image of a
fat Bugs Bunny, many stupid yet funny jokes were created around a single dumb image of a rabbit. The expression “chungy” was created because of this trend. It is typically used to label something as being
cool, and is similar to other slang such as, “pog”, “
poggers”, and “wholesome 100”. Internet users may have used it seriously a few years ago, but starting around late 2021, chungy and the previously mentioned slang have become more and more commonly used to deliberately express irony. This is stemming off of a genre of humor where individuals purposely try to be as “cringey” as possible in order to get laughs. And saying things like “chungy” and “
poggers” can definitely make one laugh.
An example of this genre of humor is in a Diary of a Wimpy Kid parody by an unknown Reddit user called, “Diary of a Band Kid.” I would include a link, but Urban Dictionary prohibited this.
