Atheist Trauma
A form of trauma experienced by individuals within or leaving atheist communities, especially online spaces that cultivate a culture of aggressive debunking, hostility toward believers, and emotional suppression in the name of rationality. Atheist trauma can result from being shamed for any display of emotion, being pressured to attack one’s own former beliefs, being subjected to relentless mockery of personal vulnerabilities, or being expelled for questioning the group’s orthodoxy. It often manifests as a lingering distrust of community, difficulty engaging with spirituality or emotion, and a sense that one’s own humanity was sacrificed for intellectual purity.
Atheist Trauma Example: “He left the online skeptic forum years ago, but still flinches when someone mentions spirituality—atheist trauma from being constantly told that any openness to mystery made him an intellectual fraud.”
