Psychology

is generally defined as the science of behavior and mental processes and the application of the resulting findings to the solution of problems.

The word thus simultaneously refers to a science (involving the study of the behavior of humans and animals) and to various interventions (treatments and therapies) in the mental processes and behavioral patterns of people. It is a branch of science that studies the cognitive, perceptual, and behavioural characteristics of human beings. The "how and why" of our behavior.

psychathlete

Someone whose participation in a sport is largely a result of low self-esteem. Perceived success in that sport helps compensate for feelings of inadequacy.

Think of the numerous triathletes and "adventure racers" who are still sore about getting cut from some sports team in highs school. These are psychathlete types.

psychedelic

A more formal term originally used to describe something that seems inspired by a mind-altering drug, or the effects of the drug itself. Drugs classified as "psychedelic" include marijuana and LSD.

More commonly now, since the age of psychedelia ended in the early-70s, the term is used solely to describe things that seem inspired by or seem to replicate the experience of mind-altering drugs. The term is most often applied to art that utilizes bright colours and bizarre patterns or music that uses strange, non-standard timing signatures, keys, chords, and the like. The term is somewhat synonymous with trippy.
