When a person breaks up with their partner, they may be unable to cope with sudden loneliness and lack of attention unlike before or aren’t willing to admit they miss their ex. So one may resort to immediately jumping into a relationship with another person afterwards or shipping themselves greatly with another person to try and get into a new relationship or get over their former one, regardless of if this new one could be healthy or not. The person being used as a backup plan or plan b may be referred to as a cushion or “cush” for short because of this, and may not even be aware of this until later on.
