Rap is a form of art. It is a genre of music which includes strong beats, singing, and often looping sounds.
Rap is often a thing people use to help concentrate*. Many athletes listen to rap before a sporting event to be able to concentrate.
Something needs to be realized about rap, and that is that it doesn't suck. People scattered across the internet are assuming the following:
"I haven't listened to rap..."
"I am assuming rap isn't good..."
"I am assuming that all it includes is talking really fast into a microphone..."
"Rap sucks."
Yet, these same, ignorant, people are the people who get upset when other people complain about rock and/or metal. They are saying that "Rap is a stoopidz from od "mosic," and generalizing that. Then, people say, "In my opinion...well, I don't know...rock is a good genre of music, but I kind of prefer rap..."
What happens now?
Hypocrisy
Hyposricy ensues. Arguments such as "that is generalizing**" occur all the time. Other arguments such as "Like 0mgz r4p promotes sex, violence, gang warfare, drugs..." Yet, this always makes me laugh. Has anyone realized that rock promotes committing suicide? As stated before, hypocrisy is exemplified.
More hypocrisy is found when you realize most people posting here WANT sex...
A majority of people posting as a "definition" of rap are the one's who are ignorant about it.
"Rap takes no talent."
Rap includes Freestyle Rap, which is definitetly NOT an easy thing to do. Freestyle includes quick thinking, custom music, and the ability to talk in a quick paced, stable tone. It is not just talking fast. Going too fast or too slow will ruin a rap. Choosing background music for a rap is not easy either. It has to FIT in.
"Rappers are g4gsters wh0 n33d to b3 sh0t."
Rappers are not gangsters***. The gangster or gangsta background is an image. The image SELLS. The intent of anybody's career is to make money to live. By this statement, rappers succeed in life.
"Rap doesn't take singing...just talking really fast. Rapping takes no musical talent."
Consider looking up the word "tempo." Rapping is not talking fast, it requires metronome, beat, poetry, tempo, and rhythm. All of these are aspects of music, henceforth, rap is music. Creating music takes talent, henceforth, rap takes talent.
I hope that helps clear people's minds up. It sickens me how unintelligent, one sentence long "definitions" are the ones with the most thumbs up. It is also pitiful how if you choose to knock this down with a "thumbs down," you will be biased. Nothing I stated here was an opinion; these are all facts.

*Several athletes have said that they always listen to rap before a sporting event.
**Generalizing can not be done to the genre of rap. In fact, rap is not a genre. It is a culture. There are many, many, many sub-genres of rap. Chances are at least one song on your iPod is a rap. Just because iTunes doesn't classify it as a rap, does it not make it a rap?
***Something needs to be understood about gangsters. Rappers are not gangsters, and chances are (if you live in urban areas), you have never seen a gangster. Gangsters are people who choose to be gangsters as a way for survival. The gangster life is the life of shooting, stealing drugs, robbing, petty theft, felonies... Rappers are not gangsters, and listening to rap or becoming a rapper does not make you a gangster.

Something that suburban white people and middle class black people think is music, but really it's just retards trying to rhyme about spending money.
It started around the 70's and used to be pretty good because it talked about the hardships of life. Then, later in the 90's it became all about spending and flaunting money while drinking, doing drugs, and/or having sex. This sad trend has continued into the new millennium and has even grown worse. Women are often objectified and drinking, doing drugs and gangs have all become common in the songs.
Rap doesn't use instruments, so it can't be considered music.
Anyone who thinks this ungodly noise can be considered music, but thinks that rock music is bad (like the majority of young people these days, what a shame) deserves to be tortured for 15 years straight. Anyone who makes this noise as a career needs to have their vocal cords ripped out.

suburban white kid: "hey, did you hear that new lil' wayne song?"
Person who knows real music: "No you douche, I listen to real music."
Middle class black kid: "Yeah, I agree. Lil' wayne is shit, 50 cent is the bomb."
Person who knows real music: "Shut up, fag. None of that rap shit is even music!

A music genre that is highly dis-respected because it is considered a genre that glorifies things that are wrong in the world. But, I have a message to people who believe that: Its only people like 50 Cent who administers impressions like that.
Its gangster rap you should be hating on, not the general rap... Like Kayne West, Common, and K-os, and many other artists who are disrespected just because its rap.

Why you all hating on rap?
Saying it ain't music, and calling it crap
It takes skills to bust out rhymes
and it all ain't about drugs, women, and crime
If you still have problems, then look up a Mr. Kanye West
Listen to a few of his tracks, and you'll agree he's the best
But don't hate if you have problems with MC's
All we're asking is to show them some love, please
Maybe 50 showed you rapping at its worst
Its people like him that making the rap game cursed
I only started liking rap about 2 months back
If you don't like my tastes, then don't give me any slack
Looking at the rhymes I'm busting at this very moment
It ain't anything gangsta, so don't give me any torment
No one said you had to share my idea of good music
But all this hate towards rap is making me lose it
I know some of you like your rock artists
But,don't go hatin on rappers, saying they retarded
Look at me, I'm rappin right now, and I ain't mental
I can be aggresive about this, but right now i'm being gentle
If any of yall want to hate, don't follow bad stereotypes
Look around, you'll see MC's come in all types
You see what I just did? I rapped completely opposite of how you all defined the rap game
I don't care what you say after I'm done, I'm still going
to show rap love, all the same.

1. A style of music that apparently many people posting here dont understand.
2. It is a relativly new genre that started in the 70s when they rapped over breaks in Jazz/Soul (generally James Brown) over the years rap has developed with drum machines, keyboards and finally the computer.
3. A genre with different coasts and areas of the USA have different styles from the Party Jams in Atlanta to the street rhymes in the East Coast, Rap is a deep genre that is called crap by people that only listen to mainstream songs.
4. Rap is what has been used by record labels to take advantage of poor black men and give them ripoff contracts and just make them appear rich (most rappers get payed $250,000 a year) because of pressure
PS: And no i am not black

1. Rap is total crap because of supposedly rich stars talk about being poor
2. Rap has evolved alot in the past 30 years
3. The depth in Rap amazes me

The most repulsive form of music. Rap is known as music where people with no musical talent use a computer to make a beat, and then talk to it. It's all drag and drop shit.
Most of the lyrical themes are vulgar and about sex or drugs and bitches. They are rarely ever in proper English and often, the words they use don't even exist. Rappers sing songs about growing up having a hard life and living a hard life while they are making 300,000+ dollars a year. Hard life my ass. They also refer to THEMSELVES as "niggers" in their songs, but if you call a rapper (or any other black person) a nigger, you are considered racist. Rappers all need to de-wang themselves. Then maybe a good thought would enter their mind. Not thoughts about "Bustin' a cap in da westside niggaz asses". But it's not really a big deal anyway considering you can rarely hear the lyrics over the sound of all the pre-recorded shit in the background.
Rap songs are basically a 4 second loop played over and over for 3 minutes. It is the most simplistic thing to ever be considered music. If a rapper tried to pick up a guitar, a bass, or any other musical instrument, the result would be pissing yourself from pure laughter since they have no musical skill.
To put it simply, rap is the lowest form of music. Anyone can make up a rhyming verse and scratch a record. It takes skill to know how to play a guitar or drums, and it takes a lot of practice. It is expected that rap will die off by 2015 due to the fact that it is all computer generated and not music.

God damn it. Before I say this, I'll have you know that I'm an 80's metalhead. In the 80's, such rappers as Public Enemy, Run D.M.C, and LLCoolJ graced the rap scene. Nowadays, such shit such as 50 Cent, JayZ, and 2pac (who, even after his death, somehow manages to release albums) attacks the charts with the pasteurized shit they call music.
Rap was an alright form of music in the 80s, until people such as 50 Cent, even after they are no longer on the street and dirt poor, still sing about it. What the hell?
