Rationality Hegemony

The cultural dominance of a specific model of rationality—typically means-end calculation, utility maximization, and consistent preference ordering—as the only legitimate standard for sane, competent decision-making. Rationality hegemony operates when economic models of rational choice become the measure of all human behavior, when anyone who makes decisions differently is pathologized as "irrational," and when alternative frameworks for good decision-making (based on virtue, relationship, tradition, or spiritual insight) are simply invisible. It's the assumption that Homo economicus isn't a model but a description of how humans should be.

Example: "His decision to care for his aging parents instead of taking the high-paying job was treated as 'economically irrational'—a perfect example of rationality hegemony mistaking one model of choice for the only model."

Reason Hegemony

The dominance of a particular conception of "reason" itself—usually the Enlightenment ideal of dispassionate, analytic, individual cognition—over all other modes of thought and understanding. Reason hegemony operates when this specific style of thinking is treated as the pinnacle of human cognition, and all other modes (emotional intelligence, embodied wisdom, relational knowing, intuitive insight) are relegated to lower status. It's the cultural assumption that the most "reasonable" person is the one who reasons like a Western philosopher, and that other ways of making sense of the world are merely primitive precursors to "real" thought.

Example: "The committee valued the candidate's cold analytic memoranda while dismissing the warm, contextually rich reports from field workers—a classic case of reason hegemony mistaking one cognitive style for intelligence itself."

Logical Hegemony

The dominance of a particular logical system—usually Western formal logic with its laws of non-contradiction and excluded middle—as the universal standard for what counts as "rational thought." Logical hegemony operates when any reasoning that doesn't conform to this system is automatically dismissed as illogical, primitive, or irrational, without considering that other logical systems might exist. It's the assumption that Aristotle discovered the one true logic rather than that he developed one useful system among many possible ones. Under logical hegemony, paradoxical reasoning, dialectical logic, or non-dualistic thought patterns are treated as failures rather than alternatives.

Example: "When the Zen master's answer violated the law of non-contradiction, the philosopher declared him irrational—a perfect example of logical hegemony mistaking its own cultural preference for universal truth."

Epistemological Hegemony

The dominance of one culture's system for knowing what is true over all others, enforced through institutions, education, and authority. Epistemological hegemony occurs when one way of answering "how do you know?" becomes so universal in a society that alternative epistemologies become literally unthinkable—not wrong, but incomprehensible. Under Western epistemological hegemony, empirical evidence and logical inference are treated as the only legitimate paths to knowledge, while knowledge through revelation, tradition, intuition, or embodied practice is systematically delegitimized. It's the deepest form of cognitive colonialism.

Example: "The missionary wasn't just spreading religion—he was establishing epistemological hegemony, teaching that knowledge comes only through Scripture and that the tribe's centuries of ecological wisdom was just 'superstition.'"

Scientific Hegemony

The dominance of scientific ways of knowing over all other forms of understanding in a culture, to the point where "scientific" becomes synonymous with "true" and "unscientific" with "invalid." Scientific hegemony describes a state where science doesn't just compete with other knowledge systems but has achieved such cultural supremacy that alternatives are not even considered as legitimate contenders. Under scientific hegemony, traditional ecological knowledge must be validated by biology before it counts; indigenous healing practices must be proven by clinical trials; philosophical insights must wait for neuroscientific confirmation. It's not that science is wrong—it's that its dominance has become so complete that we've forgotten other ways of knowing ever existed.

Example: "When he dismissed his grandmother's herbal remedies as 'unscientific' without ever testing whether they worked, he wasn't practicing science—he was enacting scientific hegemony, treating one way of knowing as the only way of knowing."

Theory of Constructed Hegemony

The concept, from Gramsci, that a ruling class maintains power not just through force, but by constructing the cultural and ideological "common sense" of an era. Hegemony is built when the dominant group's worldview—its values, beliefs, and social structures—becomes so normalized in media, schools, and everyday life that it's seen as the natural, inevitable order, not as one constructed arrangement among many. Consent is manufactured by making the constructed feel like the given.

Through 20th-century media, education, and suburbia, this specific life model was built as the default dream.
