gymnausea

jim-NOR-zee-ah

The sickness one might feel at the very mention of any gymnasium-related activity. Can also be triggered by the whiff of stale sweaty clothing or sportsbag contents.
You only have to mention indoor sports and I am overcome with gymnausea.

gymnastics

A sport which is divided into two different parts : Artistic Gymnastics -the most popular sport at the Olympics after Athletics - and Rhythmic Gymnastics - also in the Olympics but not as popular and classified as a different sport.

In artistic gymnastics there are 8 different apparatus - Vault, Uneven Bars, Beam and Floor for the women and Floor, Pommel Horse, Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars and High Bar for the men.

Exercises include multiple somersaults/somersaults with twists, jumps and dance elements. Requires great power, flexibility, determination and will power, and a high level of fitness.

Rhythmic Gymnastics, or RSG for short, in a nutshell, involves women - men don't do RSG - who are too tall for AG bending their bodies into grotesque shapes while chucking either a ball, club, rope or ribbon in the air. Requires great flexibility. Judging at international competitions is often biased and fixed, and the very top gymnasts always seem to get temporarily banned for drug abuse...

Gymnaestrada

An amazing sport that is very popular in Europe and is completely unknown in America. Teams perform routines that combine gymnastics, dance, acrobatics and stunting. Every 4 years teams from over 60 countries from all over the world come together to perform in the World Gymnaestrada, an event with even more participants than the Olympics.
This year, my gymneastrada team will be representing Canada in the 2007 World Gymnaestrada in Dorbirn.

gymnophobe

Gymnophobe: from the Greek words "Gym" and "Gymno" meaning 'nude' or 'naked', and 'phobe' meaning 'fear'.
A gymnophobe is therefore a person who has either a fear, hatred, dislike, or intolerance towards seeing a person naked in any context.
The term is much used in the nudist and naturist culture to describe a person who is actively against their approach to life such as getting a nudist club or beach forcibly closed down.
"What are you, a gymnophobe?" - a locker room incident when a person runs into a cubicle to get undressed in the presence of another person who is nude, who thus utters the phrase.
