deus ex effect

A psychological effect, induced by name dropping certain video games, that causes anyone who played that game to have a sudden urge to play it.

Named after the 2000 PC game Deus Ex, which famously will cause at least one person in the conversation to reinstall the game whenever mentioned, especially online.

Fred: Hey man, did you ever play that Deus Ex game? It was totally awesome.
Bill: Oh yeah, I loved that game! I should install it on my new PC.
Fred: Aw man, now I wanna play it!
Bill: That's the Deus Ex effect for you, buddy.

Deus Ex Machina

Dates from ancient Greek times, where "deus ex machina" ("god from the machine") in a play referred to the act of lowering a god on stage using a cable device (therefore, a god from a machine) to decide in a dilemma and give fate a nudge, so to say.

These days, deus ex machina has the negative connotation of an utterly improbable, illogical or baseless plot twist that drastically alters the situation, as if the "deus ex machina" came down to give fate that little push.

I liked the movie, but the ending was total crap...they could've come up with a better way to beat the villain than the deus ex machina ending of that guy miraculously coming back to life.

best ex ever (B.E.E.)

What your ex calls you after he/she realizes that you are the best he/she will ever have, because you treated them so damn good when you were together. No one will ever compare.

As her new boyfriend, my job is to be the best she's every had or will ever have, so she'll one day call me her best ex ever (B.E.E.). She'll be ruined on all other guys henceforth.

Deus Ex

The term originates from theatre, in which an actor is lowered from the upper stage (or more often, rises from the lower stage probably for financial and technical reasons) by a device called 'Deus Ex Machina'. This technique was used to present a character as being 'from the Gods'.

The name of arguably the greatest game ever created. Within the game 'Deus Ex' refers to the AI Helios, who having knowledge of all available information to mankind and control over every single communication on the globe is like a God, and JC Denton ('JC' debated to stand for 'Jesus Christ'), a christ-like figure who, on the box art looks to the sky as light shines down upon him against the darkness of the dystopian city behind, and who eventually manages to change the world's entire social order at the end of the game.

douche ex machinist

A writer of limited talent who weaves a myriad of complex plot lines into the beginning of his work, only to later abandon most of those plot lines in a lazy ‘deus ex machina’ story ending.

Did you watch the ending of ‘Battlestar Galactica’? There was a really douche ex machinist at work on that final episode!
