Christmas Quail

A late 19th century English tradition to hang a taxidermied quail on one's Christmas tree for good luck. It begun with King Edward VII and him gifting a quail ornament to his wife, Alexandra of Denmark, on Christmas in 1863 and him telling her that it would bring them a son. Sure enough, in January of 1864, they had their eldest son, Albert Victor. Unfortunately, he died in 1892, and Edward VII banned Christmas Quails from England. But Frederic Austin, the composer of "The 12 Days of Christmas," made sure that the tradition lived on in secret after he was forced by the king to change the lyrics of his song from "...and a quail on the Christmas tree" to "...and a partridge in a pear tree." Christmas Quail ornaments still continue to bring their owners' good luck today, as the custom still continues in many households around the world.

football Christmas

When Christmas doesn't go as planned, as in "A Christmas Story" when Ralphie asked the Mall Santa for a Red Rider b.b. gun and was offered a "nice football" instead. Not that there's anything wrong with football.
I asked for a cheeseburger but all they had was a fish sandwich. It's a total football Christmas.

Pre-Christmas Spirit

The positive feeling or attitude associated with the coming holiday - one may experience it when seeing the lights on the houses in his neighborhood, while finding perfect gifts for his family members, or when he hears holiday tunes playing in the background at one store or another. Some experience pre-Christmas spirit only to find disappointment when Christmas actually comes. This is a case where the hype and anticipation are better than the real thing.
Tracy felt the pre-Christmas spirit through November and December each time she passed by the Christmas section at the department store, but when December 25th came around and she unwrapped a sweater and a blender, she somehow lost the feeling.
