They Think It's All Over

Massively popular phrase used all the time in England to describe that exhilerating moment just before a big event like a victory or a total fuck-up. Comes from the famous commentary in the closing moments of the 1966 World Cup Final - "Some people are on the pitch ... they think it's all over (Geoff Hurst scores to put England two goals ahead)... IT IS NOW!". England beat West Germany 4-2 after extra time to become world champions. Too bad we can't do the business on the pitch these days...

It's not over until the snowman melts

A politically correct version of "It ain't over till the fat lady sings". It means that one should not presume to know the outcome of an season or event which is still in progress. A phrase is used when a situation or season is (or appears to be) nearing its conclusion. It cautions against assuming that the current state of an season or event is irreversible and clearly determines how or when the event will end. The phrase is most commonly used in association with the end of the winter season pending the last frost.
