Short Pump

1. A part of the West End of Richmond, Virginia generally synonymous with shopping or going to see a movie.
2. The place where Broad Street becomes the only eight lane road in Richmond that isn't a highway.

Guy 1: So what are you doing this afternoon?
Guy 2: I'm going to Short Pump to see a movie.
Guy 1: Dude, same, I'm going to Short Pump too, except to go to the mall with my girlfriend.
Guy 2: Sweet, maybe you and she can come over to McAlister's after y'all are done over at the mall.

Principal: Why were you late to school today?
Boy: Traffic
Principal: That's not a good enough reason.
Boy: I live in Short Pump. You try getting on 64 during rush hour.

Shortcut Shame

The act of taking an apparent shortcut only to find the person or people you were trying to get ahead of speed past as you wait knowing you have suffered from some serious shortcut shame.

Invented in Pompey in 2011.

Johnny took the shortcut to avoid the traffic lights except he came to the junction to be stopped by a parked taxi and he sees all the cars drive on by. Tommy turns to him and says "wasteman that was some serious shortcut shame"

short hairs

A euphemism for "pubic hairs," itself in this context a euphemistic metonymy for "balls". It is used mostly in expressions such as "to have someone by the short hairs," which is to say "to have someone in a very difficult or hopeless situation," equivalent to "to have someone by the balls."

It was a real Catch 22! They had me by the short hairs, and they knew it.

short poppies

A New Zealand slang for a small towner, someone who hasn't left the town they were born in. This term is used usually in a derogatory sense i.e. a dim local, ignorant hick, etc.

The town is filled with short poppies, not a working brain in the bunch.
