An indie kid is simply somebody (usually a teen) that does not fit into a mainstream stereotype. They are not exactly "defined" which is why they are indie. For example, they tend to listen to music that doesn't really fit into any genre (a.k.a "alternative") or music that is signed to independent labels. This is not to say that they only listen to rock/alternative - they listen to a wide range of music from many different genres.
Contrary to popular belief, indie kids are NOT pretentious twats who refuse to listen to anything on the charts, and they are not the same as "scene" kids.
Indie girls dress with a mixed style - they have elements of hippie, rock chick, girly or prep. Indie boys tend to wear graphic tops, jeans (straight-leg) and skater shoes like Vans, DC, Puma, Adidas, or Converse. Their hair has a sort of sexy bedhead "just rolled outta bed" look but they have actually spent some time styling it.
Indie kids are NOT scene/emo/goth. They are NOT pretentious. They are NOT snobbish. People who ARE these things, are just trying too hard, which is like the opposite of being indie.

An 'indie wannabee' is someone who wants to be 'indie' In most cases, these people were chavs before, going around getting off with every single lad in school and the all of a sudden, just to fit in with everything else, they claim to be 'indie'
These wannabee's try way too hard. The whole indie look is supposed to be laid back and not put on at all, whereas these wannabee's try way hard with their matching pumps, cardigans and highwaisted shit. Honestly, they need to get back into their 'ecko tracksuits' and stop trying to be indie.
Many 'wannabee indie kids' from the Coventry area, also known as Chaventry, claim to like The Enemy, a local indie rock band. Just because they like The Enemy, this apparently makes the all indie cindys. No, it doesn't. They need to be told.
"You wannabee indie cindys, please fuck off back to your street corner smoking your roll ups and drinking your wkd. You are not indie and never will be, no matter how hard you try, alright!?"

Elle: "You're chav turned indie wannabee, actually. You try too hard!"

Even trying to describe an indie girl is fake. You can't because she's no one thing, she doesn't want a label, then she'd be constrained. She changes according to her mood, which is completely ephemeral just like her nature. Past definitions seem to be from indie girl wannabes and guys who have been hurt by indie girls or indie girl posers. APPARENTLY, I am an 'indie chick'. Someone called me that today and i had to look it up, what on earth is an 'indie chick'? She's usually hard on herself and extremely fragile under her seemingly tough and effortless being. She's feisty and sensitive, friendly and reserved or anything in between.
"I like your shirt."
indie chick: "Thanks it's just a sarong tied here and here."
"You're a cool chick."
indie chick: "Your just saying that because I cried."

a type of dance. Popular at the height of the resurgence of guitar-led groups around the turn of the Millennium (The Strokes, Libertines, etc), though still going strong today. It involves awkwardly dancing just about enough so as to avoid any attention based on correctly held assumptions of your character, principally that you would rather be sitting down and/or cannot dance. Often practised in bad clubs on cheap alcoholic drinks whilst not talking to pretty girls. It usually backfires when the aforementioned cheap alcohol really kicks in and you either try to talk to a pretty girl or start a mosh-pit to Blondie and are thrown out of the premises.
Not to be mistaken for the indie rock shuffle
Not to be mistaken for the indie rock shuffle
Dave was doing the indie shuffle to The Smiths "How Soon Is Now" whilst staring at a girl he had no chance with when he inadvertently spilt someone's beer and ended up on the floor crying like Morrissey in an abattoir.

People usually in their teens or 20's who try really hard to be different from everyone else that they all made their own little group. It is quite rare, but some people are naturally indie. These are the people you see on the street that look like Urban Outfitters models and wear things you could find at good will or a thrift store. Although these hipsters often spend a lot of cash flow on their clothing, they continue to look like they've been wearing the same outfit for days. They thrive on unheard of bands. Some mainstream indie is Garden State Soundtrack. Indie kids get mad when their holy indie bands become the least bit popular and ditch the band for one that they heard at a mysterious pub on a backstreet of an indie little town. They love the cold. They LOVE photography and always have fancy cameras with a million different functions around their neck. They also use polariod cameras as well. Indie kids do low key activities like book signings, local bands, unheard of coffee shops ect. Indie kids are mostly always artistic in one way or another. They talk an awful lot about changing the world but dont do shit about it themselves (its too mainstream). Every indie person is under 130 pounds, its impossible to be indie and fat. Even the guys are manorexic. This is because indies spend all their money on clothes and coffee, they dont have time for food.
"indie People"
If i named anything indie you wouldnt even know what it was.
but mainstream indie movies along the lines of, Garden State, 100 Days of Summer, Donnie Darko. Pretty much any independent film.

the coolest kids at your school. but you don't know them because they are too indie. They are the kids who constantly have headphones in there ears and even though the teacher tells them to take them out. Indie kids have the most rockin' style, it's not too G, or to trashy it's perfect because it's simple and they don't go around reppin' all the big name brands.
