A word that is commonly confused with sadness.
Here's the difference:
Sadness is a human emotion that all people feel at certain times during their lives. Feeling sad is a natural reaction to situations that cause emotional upset or
pain. There are varying degrees of sadness. But like other emotions, sadness is temporary and fades with
time. In this
way, sadness differs from depression
Depression is a longer-term mental illness. It impairs social, occupational, and other important areas of functioning.
Left untreated, symptoms of depression may last for a long
time.
So just because you have some unfortunate events in your life that have made you sad, doesn't necessarily mean that your depressed. Although depression can be caused by
bad events in your life (e.g.. rape, abuse, bulling, death of a loved
one etc) that's not
always the case.
You can get depression even if your life is alright. Sadness happens to everyone and with
time, it goes away. Doing stuff that you love, having fun and other stuff like that can make your sadness go away. But when you'
re depressed, these things just dint work out for you Any more because you begin to lose interest in everything that used to bring you
joy and fun. You end up feeling emotionally drained and
don't enjoy things like you used to.
In conclusion: depression isn't just sadness. So
don't use the word "depression" where you meant to say "sadness" or "sad". And DONT use the word "depression" as an adjective
