The term "Sponge" refers to Spongebob Squarepants.

Spongebob often shows many signs of stupidty, and simpleness.
The simple/stupid person normally performs an action which makes them look stupid, and their brain is useless.

When calling one a sponge, you are referring to their lack of intelligence.
