Dudley

A slang term for cannabis in the west midlands. An urban legend states that the first place cannabis truly took root in England was the town of Dudley in the late 16th century. Since then, residents of the west midlands have continued to use the term, particularly in relation to celebrations of the herb on the 20th of April (where the term 420 originated). As a result of this local tradition, the term 'dudley' has been used to refer to 'spliffs' since the at least 2007 - when a group of anthropology students from UCL wrote an autoethnographic study investigating Dudley's autolinguistic term to refer to cannabis.
