When somebody decides to "give up" or take a break from some of their otherwise favorite things.

Morgan, who decided to go on a hiatus from boys, beer, and books, is no longer on a hiatus and is ready to go crazy again!

friend hiatus

When a friend commits an act that you don't approve of, you can put said friend on "friend hiatus" to show your disapproval.

Friend hiatus usually only lasts between a few minutes to an hour but special circumstances may call for an extended friend hiatus.

Sally- Hey John, sorry I couldn't hang out yesterday, but I'm free now.

John- Yeah whatever, you're on friend hiatus till tomorrow.

indefinite hiatus

A fancy term for 'break up'. Bands use it to think it will soften the blow on their fans, when they infact know the harsh truth.

Can also be used when you don't believe anything will ever get done

Ex. 1: Blink.182 and Sleater-Kinney say they're on 'indefinite hiatus', but everyone knows they've broken up...

Ex. 2: Pete Wentz says that Release The Bats 2 has been put on 'indefinite hiatus'. He might as well say it's never going to be released.

Hygiene Hiatus

A short time span where one voluntarily does NOT shower or shave. As you are NOT needing to be anywhere or meet anybody, you just let yourself go and be free!

Roger: Hey, Dave! How was your three day holiday? You did not have to go anywhere, right?

Dave: Oh, Man, it was great! I did not have to shave or shower, and all I did was watch playoff football and eat pizza! A hygiene hiatus like this was perfect!
