A form of applause whereby the middle finger and thumb of both hands are repeatedly snapped/clicked instead of clapped. Beatnik applause was developed in the cafes of the 1950s/1960s by the Beatnik/Beat Generation. Many "Beat Poet" fans of this period now suffer from severe arthritic inflammation of the thumb and middle finger.

People think that hipsters are a new thing, but in reality have been around for years, the only difference is that a modern hipster mixes the beatnik style with indie, scene or emo.
They were a subculture of (mostly wealthy) young people in the 1950's that drank coffee, enjoyed art and music, wrote poetry, did psychedelic drugs, and smoked cigarettes. Practiced minimalism, and were very, very political. Men wore berets with striped shirts and sandals, and the women wore berets, little black dresses and scarves.
Would say slang things like "That's beat" and "daddy-O".

Get the Beanar mug.A real-time DJ simulator that requires players to press keys arranged similar to a piano and/or spin a turntable and/or pressing a pedal when instructed by falling dashes. Three versions currently exist: beatmania (having 5 keys and a record), beatmania IIDX (adding two keys, current game being produced), and beatmania III (5 keys, a record, and a pedal). People playing the game seem like they have no lives, as it takes awhile to play without looking at the controller and to spin the turntable efficiantly. There is one US release of beatmania to date and the release was not as accepted compared to Guitar Hero II, released around the same time, so the only way to get better songs is to import the games.
