US Conservative

A general term that can include many belief systems that can get confused together. Religious Conservative, Neo-Conservative, and Constitutional Conservatism are sometimes confused as if they are all the same.

For one example, a constitutional conservative may also believe in Christianity and therefore an unfamiliar liberal person may free associate and have knee jerk reaction to believe that the conservative wants to combine the church and state.

A constitutional conservative would want a powerless federal government and abhor government enforcement of theocracy. Oppositely, a religious conservative would want a government that is powerful enough to use those powers of federal government for the enforced values learned in religion.

It serves the purpose of liberals and progressives to cloud the conventional wisdom that defines a US Conservative.
A US Conservative tries to read and understand the US Constitution. A US Liberal tries to read and understand Karl Marx.

A US Conservative speaks of the Federal Government in terms of what "they" are doing. A US Liberal spaeks of the Federal Government in terms of what "we" are doing.

A US Conservative thinks in terms of Federal Government. A US Liberal thinks in terms of National Government

A US Conservative thinks in terms of State and State Sovereignty. A US Liberal thinks in terms of Provinces and National Soveriegnty.

A US Conservative believes the individual gets power from God and the individual gives that power to government. A US Liberal believes the individual gets power from the government and there is no other source of power.

A US Conservative believes government has limited powers only within the definition of the Constitution. A US Liberal believes the individual has limited powers only within the judgement of the all-powerful government.

conservative bias

What liberals accuse any news outlet or commentator who disagrees with them of having (liberals usually deny the existence of liberal bias, since they like to think they're too open-minded to be biased). The term is most frequently directed at Fox News Channel, Rush Limbaugh, and anyone who shows even a hint of civility to Ann Coulter.

Some ultra-left commentators such as Amy Goodwin, Eric Alterman, and Noam Chomsky have tried to prove that mainstream media, widely known for its liberal bias, actually leans to the right, but mostly on the grounds that it doesn't lean as far to the left as they do.
"I never listen to talk radio. There's just too much conservative bias!"

"But if you don't listen, how would you know?"

"Uh, well. . . hey, here's my bus!"

neo-conservative

A term used chiefly by liberals of the present day to describe conservatives in power. The word has a highly negative connotation due to the fact that it is used by liberals who were badly burned twice in a row in the '00 and '04 elections.

Neo-conservative

A mix of Conservativism and Classical Liberalism. Internationalist in nature, neo-conservatism is very concerned with political freedom, democracy, human rights, and economic freedom, and believes that these ideas are universally applicable. Pro-American, pro-Israeli, and pro-Taiwanese.

Most prominant neo-conservatives were liberals who came to change their opinion on economics.

Generally identified with the philosophy of Irving and Bill Kristol, Jeane Kirpatrick, Max Boot, Paul Wolfowitz, Natan Sharansky, Charles Krautheimer, James Woolsey, and Bill Bennett.

Possibly the closest to the political philosophy of George W. Bush.

politically conservative

Maintaining and advocating time worn political and economic methods and credos despite compelling evidence of their being retrograde, ineffective, or deleterious.
Someone politically conservative often evidences the following symptoms: Vague rants against socialism, without specificity. Reliance on supposed intentions of the "founding fathers." Promulgating contention based on political parties rather than public good-- us versus them mentality. Reflexively negative reaction to any thing or idea remotely new-- ergo, not a certainty, not proven-- maintaining a stultified political and economic culture.
