The task is not to eliminate them but to handle them responsibly, with humility about their limits.
Example: "They were debating whether the stimulus had worked. The question itself required necessary counterfactuality: what would have happened without it? She acknowledged the uncertainty: 'We can't know for sure, but models suggest...' Necessary counterfactuality meant she couldn't avoid speculation, but she could be honest about its limits.
