mechanics grip

Holding a deck of cards in the palm of your hand with your thumb resting along one side of the deck, your forefinger on the top edge of the deck, and the rest of your fingers along the other side of the deck from your thumb. Often used to describe an aggressive or suspicious handle on an object.
I was suspicious of Nigel as with his experience, he's probably trying something with his mechanics grip.
