Leelah Alcorn

The preferred name of the male-to-female transgender teen previously known as Joshua Alcorn. Leelah committed suicide early in the morning on December 28, 2014, by leaping in front of a speeding truck. On her Tumblr account, Leelah set a suicide note to be posted soon after her death. The note describes her life story of living with emotional abuse from her family, not being able to see her friends, and being subjected to conversion therapy against her will. Leelah's parents, Carla and Doug, punished her severely when she first came out to them; punishments included being taken out of high school, having no time with friends, and losing access to internet and cell phone communication. The Alcorn parents are extremely conservative Christians who could not accept Leelah's hopes. After the suicide, Carla Alcorn made numerous statements on Facebook and on television interviews, all the while referring to "Joshua" with male pronouns, despite their child's dying wishes.

Leelah's story became viral within days, being broadcast on news channels around the country. A petition called Leelah's Law, posted by the Transgender Human Rights Institute, was signed by hundreds of thousands of internet users. The suggested law is a ban of transgender conversion therapy, a cruel practice that has been medically proven to greatly increase depression and suicide rate in American transgender youth.

The news of Leelah Alcorn's suicide caught the attention of millions of people nationwide.

She is smart, beautiful, wonderful to be around, caring, and has the most beautiful eyes and smile anyone has ever seen. The most beautiful, intelligent person you will ever meet, she is very nice and loyal and everybody wants to be her friend. All the boys fancy her but during high school she will date a stoner named after a colour because she doesn't believe she is good enough for her prince (who is very tall). She will be very famous and successful. She is also the bravest and kindest person in the world.

Leela is a girl who is very passionate about the things she likes. She can also fall in love way to quickly and ends up getting hurt. She also is very insecure but doesn't like to show it. She can be very weird but people can find her funny in her own way. She can be one of the most weirdest crackheads you would ever meet. She can be very kind but if you piss her off or cross the line in anyway you should consider yourself dead or if she is still wants to be generous she would just hurt you very badly and send you to the hospital. She is a genuinely a sweet caring person. She will make you feel like if you are one of the most important people in the world and she will always put your happiness in front of hers. She is also very good at faking her happiness when she doesn't want people to worry about her. Some people may think of her as a very easy target but she really isn't. She really doesn't like talking about herself and would change somethings about herself just to fit in. Some people may fear her and others may not but only her closest friends know the real her and she is one of the best people you can talk to.
