strauss

Technically, either Johann Strauss the Waltz King or Richard Strauss, the more serious composer who wrote tone poems and operas. Among real musicians, though, 'Strauss' almost invariably refers to Richard Strauss. You are a total noob if you think music festivals and professional orchestras program silly waltzes all the time when you see Strauss in their repertoire.
"Hey, wanna come to my concert tonight? The conductor's amazing, and we're playing Strauss."

"Uhh...I don't know if I care to hear Emperor Waltz or the Blue Danube again."

"Aww come on- we're talking 'Death and Transfiguration' here!"

Stress

Caused when you go to a shitty crackpot high school where eveyrone acts like their on crack all the time in front of the teachers, who also act like their on crack because they totally approve of the unacceptable behavior. When people are throwing stuff at you and other people, adn their is no respect for the community, where people just shun each other and make racist comments without a good reason, and you are just standing there unable to beleive whats going on in your pathetic little world, and start to question your sanity. and your brain constantly blanks out because you are trying to figure out why everyone is sooo FUCKED UP, and you are possibly the only normal (or were) human being existing in that place.
And when you stay in that pathetic world for a while, hmmm, lets say, about 10 months, you start to lose your identity and become one of these pathetic creatures. it IS sad. With all this stress you start to act up on everyone to the point where your mom wants to disown you and now your life is like some kinda shitty movie of a teenagers shitty life. word of advice? DONT come to central jersey.
Person Talking to Girl Under This Stress: OMG, could you help me?

Girl Under This Stress: NO, GET THE FUCK AWAY!!! OMG WHY DOES EVERYONE WANT SOMETHING FROM ME???WHY CANT YOU ALL LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE???

Person talking to Girl Under This Stress: Wow, you have some serious issues!!!

Girl Under This Stress: Yeah, its like I dont know who I am anymore! The world is slowly ocming to an end with all these crackpotted aholes!!

stress and duress

Newspeak for torture, used by the CIA and its allies. "Stress and duress" tactics are used in interrogations, and refer to a variety of tortures and forms of mistreatment which the CIA thinks are OK. These include:
sleep deprivation
overload of light
complete darkness
stripping and sexually humiliating prisoners
threatening to torture and rape prisoners
threatening prisoners' families
making prisoners stand, sit etc. in uncomfortable positions to induce pain
denial of satisfaction of basic rights and needs such as food, bedding, clothing and exercise
deliberate cultural insensitivity and intolerance
verbal abuse
use of painful "restraint" techniques
beatings
These techniques are widespread also in US prisons, although nominally illegal. They are more widely used in deregulated offshore gulags such as Guantanamo Bay, abu Ghraib in Iraq and Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan.

Don't be fooled - these tactics ARE TORTURE, and are defined as such both by the UN and by experts in trauma. Their role is to break down the sense of personality of the prisoner and to deliberately induce psychological trauma and crisis.

They are directly referred to in CIA handbooks - so the photos from abu Ghraib show a systematic pattern of torture, NOT rogue acts by a few stupid/evil/misguided soldiers.

Strauss'd

Primarily used in an academic setting to describe a scenario where a person has no choice but to mindlessly follow along with a situation that may have negative consequences or be completely void of logic and reason.

This originally referred to the Kafkaesque attempt to learn the philosophy of the German-Jew Leo Strauss (an attempt best described as a futile, self-infliction of mental anguish) but has since evolved into a more generic term. Professors and advocates of Strauss' philosophy are known for being staunch defenders of his writings through even the most devastating of critiques.

Characteristics of Strauss' writings are:

-Summing up the ideologies and life's work of a philosopher in a brief, passing remark when a thorough and in-depth knowledge would be necessary to comprehend the arguments being made.
-Writing ironically or, without warning, speaking from the perspective of a writer he completely disagrees with.

-Using the same logical fallacies that he criticizes in others.
-Writing an endnote that fills multiple pages of text.

The term is applied when an absurd lack of reason or logic has forced the victim into an uncomfortable corner.
Student A: "But didn't Aristotle say (example)?"
Professor: "Ah but Strauss said about Aristotle that (loosely related example). Does that make more sense now?"
Student A: "Ok..."
Student B: *whispers* "You got Strauss'd"
-----------------------
Student A: "How are your finals going?"
Student B: "Fine, except my professor moved up the due
date on the term paper. Now I have 3 papers due on the same day."
Student A: "You got Strauss'd."
