metro minute

A minute with an indeterminate duration. A metro minute could be 30 seconds or 30 minutes, and you don't know how long it lasted until it's actually over. Derived from the Washington Metro Area Transportation Authority (WMATA) metro train arrival times, which can never be taken at face value.

Jim: Man, it looks like I got to the station right on time. It says the next metro train will be here in 2 minutes.
Tim: You know those are metro minutes, right? Either the train has already pulled into the station and we missed it, or we're gonna be here for a while.

Sarah: Where the hell is Jessica? She said she was changing outfits and will be out in a minute.
Kara: She meant she'll be out in a metro minute. Just sit tight, it could be a while.

the mitts

A term used to describe a hot person. Derived from the saying "She's so hot you have to take her out with oven mitts." This term is reminiscent of old sayings like "the bee's knees" or "the cat's pajamas." Since its creation, it has been adapted to refer to anything that is very good or cool.

About a hot person:
Terrence: Did you see that smokin' hot girl freak dancing on me?
Nicholas: Yeah she was the mitts.

About anything:
Daniel: Dear God. Look at the size of that broadsword. I must have it.
Nicholas: Yeah, that thing is the mitts.

The originally Welsh oxymoron meaning you are on your way, but not immediately. You need a minute to gather your thoughts/things/feelings before you traverse the journey you are about to undertake.

Tradtionally shouted from the top of the stairs to parental figures.

Mum: 'Hurry up love, your bus is here!'
Victim: 'Don't worry! I'll be there now in a minute!!'

five minutes

The best response to temporarily put off, or get out of, nearly anything. Most effective when combined with the terms "Like" or "About." Contains many useful applications:

1) Buying time

2) Fooling the other person into thinking you will do something when you actually have no intention to, and hoping they forget

3) Using it multiple times until the desired effect is achieved

(see below)

ex1) "Hey son, would you pause that game and clean your room for me?"
"Sure. Just gimme like five minutes."

ex2) "It's your birthday today? Of course I know...hey I'll be over in about 5 minutes and we'll hang out." (unsuspected birthday gift card run to the supermarket, as if you actually remembered)

ex3) "Good morning honey, time to get up for work."

"MMMyeah...in Five minutes."

(One hour later)

"Hey it's been an hour--get up already!!"

"Alright, alright.....in five minutes."

Windows minute

A reference to time where the culculated period bears no connection to the reality of that time span. Used to understate the significance of accurate measurement.

Origin: Microsoft Windows' inability to convey an accurate file download, or transfer, time.

I'll be there in a windows minute.
Translation: I'll be there sooner or later, perhaps.
